I will give it another shot with the new OSX and see how things go. I had Lion, and this week I upgraded to Mavericks, so I never had the ML, TM experience. Can you try temporarily turning off Time Machine in the System Preferences and then choose Select Backup Disk on the right and choose the 12TB disk. In my opinion, that's a waste of time and space. With a change that big, Time Machine didn't have the space necessary to purge the old data and make space for the new.
