Luckily I had an old XP PC that was still working, so I used that to repeat the process above. I have removed and tried again, and when it connects it backs up and overswrites the previous back up so now my back up wont go back on. We decided to spring for a map update at £50 which we paid and then followed the instructions for. Probably the disk is full ! Now I got map North_America_P v860.3121. Then try renaming mydocuments\tomtom\home\download to mydocuments\tomtom\home\downloadOLD. I haven't even used the GPS yet..it is brand new.

If you don't have a folder called your_map_name, then create one using Explorer. Go to TT HOME, Manage my "DEVICE", delete everything from the hard drive and try the update again (in the new TomTom HOME app it is on the second page). The Rider2 has served me well touring Europe on my motorcycle, but the software and backup leaves something to be desired. Normally they can be replaced.

(I am on a connected computer) Did this also and was able to download the map again but same error message. and when you find the gps unusable in it present state. Thank you again.
